SCHOOL INFO
Finnish school is a public secondary school situated in the suburb of Järvenpää. The location in
suburb has a lot influence to every day work in the school. There are approx. 400 students an in the school in age between 12 and 16 years and about 40 teachers and 15 other employees. There are quite many social issues and problems in the families of pupils. A lot of them need a great support from the school stuff. Students also need more possibilities to practice their language skills. They need guiding with their everyday life. A part of student have many sport hobbies but computers and mobile phone games are still addictive for them. Students are tired and can’t concentrate and that causes bad behavior. Project will help students to change their attitude by enlarging their view, getting to know students from different European countries at the same age. It could also give some experience of success for those who are not having good degrees in traditional school subjects. And that way it will increase the motivation to take a part in school activities and create a comfortable feeling at school and prevent early school leaving. In Finland we have just started to work with the new curriculum. It includes new way of teaching, new methods, phenomenal learning, cross curricular way of thinking, and working with different kinds of projects around the school year. Our whole organisation still needs practise with this to use these methods in sensible ways. For some students this way of studying is easy but there are many students with lack of experience and capacity to feel comfortable with for example studying without the teacher in groups or studying outside of the classroom. In Finnish schools all students study creative subjects as obligatory and also as optional subject. Those subjects give also an opportunity to work with this new project in the way that all the students in our school are involved to this project and it benefits us all. Our current students are informed about that we are applicating this project and are already very motivated to take a part. Staff profiles that will be involved in this projects: The Headmistress is an English teacher with the experience of international projects. She is willing to start this new project and ready to give a lot of support for the school staff. Music teacher, teachers of Finnish language and Literature and Drama and ICT teacher all have experience from several international projects (Comenius, Erasmus) and they all are really motivated to start working with a new project. Results from the previous projects have been extremely good and inspiring. After the first projects the group of teachers exceeded. In the last project we had also Chemistry and Math teacher, Home economic teacher and Art teacher working with us. Now we have some new colleagues how are eager to learn new and work multiculturally. One of our special skill is that we all speak English well and so do our students. |
